A Davis man's crusade has prompted Target stores to remove clothing with a white supremacist symbol from all of its stores.
Joseph Rodriguez was shocked when he found shorts and other apparel printed with skulls and the numbers "88" on them. "Eight-eight" is a symbol of white supremacist groups, standing for "Heil Hitler." It is believed the racist groups adopted the numbers as a symbol because "H" is the eighth letter of the alphabet.
Rodriguez first found the clothes at the Elk Grove Target, then at other area Target stores. He said Target initially ignored his complaints, but after he enlisted the help of the Southern Poverty Law Center, the store agreed to pull the clothing from all 1,100 of its stores nationwide.
The Minneapolis-based chain issued this statement to the Southern Poverty Law Center: "Target apologizes for any discomfort that may have been caused by the baseball caps and shorts carrying the insignia 88. Target is a family-oriented store and company and it is not our intent to carry any merchandise that promotes hate."
